Little hands hold the title of first Waste Smart Kindy

Brisbane City Council has crowned Canossa Kindergarten in Coorparoo Brisbane’s first Waste Smart Kindy.

Coorparoo Ward Councillor Fiona Cunningham said Council’s Waste Smart Kindy Program was designed to teach Brisbane’s youngest residents how to be waste smart, while providing suggestions to help kindergarten centres become more sustainable.

“Canossa Kindergarten has shown a real commitment to keeping Brisbane clean and green and we’re proud to call them Brisbane’s first Waste Smart Kindy,” she said.

“Educators at Canossa completed our Waste Smart Kindy professional development course and decreased the amount of waste sent to landfill, while upping their recycling efforts.

“Canossa had a compost system and basic recycling set up at the kindy and now they have taken the next step on their waste minimisation journey.

“All new staff are required to complete the Waste Smart Kindy course and they have improved their recycling system with new clearly labelled signage on all bins.

“The children are encouraged to learn about waste management and play lunch games to help them easily identify what goes in each bin.

“We are proud to provide the tools early learning educators need so our youngest residents can be part of creating a cleaner and greener future.”

Field Services Chair Vicki Howard said Council was encouraging early learning centres across Brisbane to become a Waste Smart Kindy.

“It’s important for residents of all ages to be mindful about the amount of waste going to landfill,” she said.

“Brisbane sends approximately 600,000 tonnes of waste to landfill every year and programs, including Council’s Waste Smart Kindy, will go a long way in reducing this figure.

“We all have a part to play in protecting our precious natural environment and I highly encourage early learning centres to participate in the program.

“This is just one of the many ways that Council is making the Brisbane of tomorrow even better than the Brisbane of today.”
